Sailing in CRETE
Crete is not a major sailing destination by Greek standards. It is not easily accessible. The route via Karpathos can be stormy and neither it nor Kassos are that appealing. The other route via the Peloponnese is a longish trot as is that to Santorini. Heading south, the Meltemi will be with you, but on the nose heading north in very open seas.
The north coast is a lea shore not rich in safe harbours except for the lagoon of Spinalonga and Agios Nikolaos. The south coast is to be viewed with the utmost caution. The Meltemi blasts down the mountains and safe harbours there are almost none. Charter yachts there are very few anywhere on the island.
The great attraction of Crete is not the sailing, but the land and the people. Agios Nikolaos is one of the most active and well liked of all winter liveaboard destinations.
