Sailing in the DODECANESE

Our love of sailing in Greece generally is well documented throughout this site.  Of all the Greek sailing regions, two stand out - the Cyclades and the Dodecanese.  In the days when visiting sailors could drop in and out of neighbouring Turkey easily, we would probably have put the Dodecanese at the top of the list. Even now Nisyros, Tilos, Symi, Kalimnos, Patmos, Lipsi, Agathonisi, and Samos weave their magic spell.

There are large charter fleets based in Rhodes, Kos, and Samos. The first two are very well served by flights in season, and flights to Samos are frequent as well and the charter base almost within walking distance.

All three offer attractive one week cruises

  • Good selection of charter yachts

  • Several  attractive itineraries for a one week cruise

  • Excellent scenery wherever you go

  • Suitable for sailors having some experience because it is often quite windy (Force 5 or even 6)

  • Quick trips to Turkey are currently impossible

Description

Utterly charming, but with only room for 2 yachts alongside. Fearsome rocks to port of the entry channel, and catabatic winds can make the entry very risky. If it is full, you have a long trip to safety. The little bars there are marvelous.

Description
The only reasonably safe harbour for yachts on the northern side of Ikaria. You are indeed safe from the katabatic winds of the south, but exposed to the Meltemi. The little town is however full of charm and if you are in need of a port on Ikaria, this is a good choice. However with a strong NE Meltemi (NW is more usual) the port is untenable for yachts.

Description

The main ferry port for Ikaria, this is sometimes a necessary stop, but unlikely to be a first choice. Mainly cruising yachts are on their way to or from the Cyclades and stop off here on the way. The leeside of Ikaria is subject to violent and prolonged katabatic winds that at times are astonishingly hot. It felt like God had turned on a turbo burner. They only stop at 2a.m. as we know to our cost!

Despite that Ikaria has a wild grandeur and we have seen more dolphins in the area than anywhere else except around the N. Sporades.

Poor holding for your anchor makes this an unreliable place to berth. There are plenty of good anchorages and the occasional pier along the west coast of the main island that make better places to stay. Fourni is wonderfully wild with few tourists; those that do come are made to feel most welcome. Join them, do.

Description
The Town Quay has the necessary basic facilities. Skala itself is pleasant with excellent shopping and a wealth of restaurants. A lazy coffee in the main square passes a relaxing moment. Do not miss the monastery in the Chora above - one of the great sights of Greece. Regular bus to and from. Beware of the hordes from any visiting cruise shjip. Avoid the restaurants in the Chora - over-priced and poor quality. There is a fully functioning windmill on the crest here and the view over the bay and islands from here is just breathtaking.

Along with nearby Lipsi, this is one of our all time favourites. Room for about 12 yachts. Anchoring is an uncertain affair despite what the guide books say. The cafe/boutique where you land is delightful, and there are a couple of very acceotable tavernas. Don't miss the semi-tame cormorant at around 9 in the morning.

One of the very best sailing destinations in the whole of Greece; we love it. Pretty town; good shopping; friendly people; A special mention for the little ouzerie on the left as oyu leave. Great little meze with your drink. The bakery is excellent; other provisions less so. Usually no fish and the butcher not the best. Local white wine among the best we know in Greece. The bay just round the headland to the east is another gem. Our photo.

Lakki is not a favourite of ours generally and neither is this marina. It is expensive and our recpetion was chilly. However anchoring in the bay, while safe, is also an unpleasant experience with motor bikes and cars racing noisily round the bay almsot all night.

Although we have listed it here as a marina, the reality is that it is mainly an over-winter storage base and as such enjoys a good reputation at competitive prices. A short stay berth in high season may be less easy.
