Sailing in the E. Sporades

Generally ignored by crusing sailors, and bypassed by the charter companies, this is one of our absolutely favourite cruising grounds. Chios, Psara, Eftratios, Lesbos, and Limnos offer magnificent scenery, safe sailing and an atmosphere that we found nowhere else in Greece. Chios was definitely our "island of the year" in 2018, and we long to return. Because it is less known, we are devoting more space than usual to a sailing description.

This is not an area to be rushed round in a week! Although technically part of the E. Sporades, Samos is covered in our Dodecanese section, but is likely to be the starting point for a visit further north.

Chios is light on infrastructure for sailing - the main harbour is dodgy, and access to the unfinished marina is very dangerous, and once there it is a long trot into town. You need to figure on at least two and better three days here. The "Masticha" villages are amazing; the north is a wooded paradise, and the centre has some great tourist sites.

On Lesbos, Mytlini is useful for its facilities. You can stay in the marina or in town which can be oppressive because of the refugees issue. However we thoroughly enjoyed our too brief stay at Ploumari (the home of Ouzo). There are the two inland seas to explore, particularly Kalloni. Despite the petrified forest, we didn't rate Sigri, but Methymna is simply gorgeous (beware of crossed anchors and RATS!

The really way out islands of Psara and Evstratios have an unworldly charm that we found nowhere else, and they need your custom - particularly the latter. Please go if you can!

Limnos - over-renowned for its white wines in our view - is also an attractive place to visit. For those of a historical turn of mind, the bay of Moudros (departure point for the disastrous 1916 Gallipolli invasion) is evocative.

Charter yachts verge on the non-existent - there are a few based at Mytlini on Lesbos.

Quick trips to Turkey are currently impossible - a great sadness and a loss to all of us.

The harbour of Chios is large and therefore somewhat exposed. It is however free if without facilities. The proximity to Turkey and a large refugee presence on the island is a problem, but overall this is one of the most interesting of all Greek islands with three almost separate climates and eco systems. Hire a car and take 3 days to visit all the island. In a strong Meltemi, the port is not safe, and despite the care needed to enter, the unfinished marina to the north is a better place to be if you want to visit the island.

The marina was unfinished when we last visited in 2018. The entrance is extremely dangerous - essential to follow pilot book instructions to the letter or the rocks beckon. Fairly regular bus into town; some restaurants nearbyand a large supermarket. When in Chios, hire a car to visit the island! Excellent shelter

The harbour is very pretty and super safe. Provisions stores are limited, but there are numerous good unpretentious restaurants. It was a haunt of the Greek shipowners in their heyday and has a bit gone down hill with them, but that is part of its charm.

Way off the beaten track and full of charm. Restaurants along the waterfront. Island is made relatively wealthy by being home to many long distance vesel captains who bring home large pay packets. The image does not do justice to the charm of the place.

Completely safe harbour on the north of Chios. Seafront restaurants and good inexpensive provisions up the hill. Rather engaging, much more so than you would guess from the image.

Is the spiritual home of Ouzo and the remains of earlier distilleries are still to be seen around the bay. The harbour is uninspiring but the little town is delightful. We dined happily under a huge plane tree and felt very welcome.

Tiny fishing harbour fairly close to the entrance of this inland sea. We looked but thought it might be tight even for our modest 12m. Has a reputation for excellent fish restaurants.

Setur Mitlini Marina

The only safe refuge along the east coast of Lesbos, Setur do their usual competent job. It is a long trot into town but you can also moor much more cheaply in the very busy and noisy main harbour. Most technical services available. The island has a barely manageable refugee problem that it is impssible not to notice. Despite that, we spent a very pleasant couple of days here.

This is an alternative to the marina that is some dsitance out of town. You can expect a detailed visit from the Coast Guard, but otherwise pleasant enough as a stopping poiont to visit the island. No facililties.
