SARDINIA Yacht Charters

Sardinia is a large island that for sailing purposes can be divided in two - south and north. The latter includes the world famous Maddalena Islands and the gilded cage of the Costa Smeraldo.

Having sailed the whole of the east coast in 2019 starting from the south, we can confirm that it is almost entirely devoid of interest until you are approaching Olbia. The exception is around Arbatax. The west coast north of Carloforte is an area also short of interest and light on safe havens should the weather unexpectedly deteriorate. We have not yet been there, but hear nothing but good about the zone between Cagliari and Carloforte. Alghero is much liked as well.

Overall we were underwhelmed by the north. We were there in August - big mistake - but were deterred by the lack of basic courtesy and competence of many including dangerous large power yacht owners. Refuelling and getting food and water are much more difficult than in, say, Greece, Turkey, or Croatia. Anchorages were often grossly over-crowded, and marinas are very very expensive (€135 for our 40 footer at Portisco). Apart from La Maddalena, the lack of attractive small towns was also a disappointment. Sailing conditions were however absolutely excellent all summer.

This is a very different experience to chartering bareboat and then hiring a skipper. The offer runs from simple 40 foot monohulls to super luxury fully crewed craft - mainly catamarans.
