Sailing in SARDINIA
Sardinia is a large island that offers extensive cruising options. As is very evident from the interactive map below, the north east coast is where there is the greatest concentration of yachting facilities. We made the passage from the Egadi islands off Sicily to the south-east corner and then up the coast via Arbatax to the Olbia region. That was of little overall interest.
The Olbia region, the glitzy Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena Islands all offered good safe cruising and mostly ideal wind conditions. Despite that, for us it did not really cut the mustard. It is true that we were there in peak season, but refilling with water required careful planning and having to pay €20; marina prices were astonishing; and the hordes of ill-mannered "gommoni" with 40HP outboards too often ruined the beauty of everywhere. The small towns that make sailing in Croatia, Turkey, and Greece as well as Corsica are notably absent. Friends tell us firmly that we would see things differently if we returned our of season. We are happy to believe that.
